Goodness in Beauty
Our Ethos at Diotima & Co.
Diotima of Mantinea was the only female philosopher to feature in Plato’s famous Symposium. She is credited in describing how we, as human beings conceptualise love, beauty and the nature of goodness. She proposed that we inherently desire what is beautiful, because what is beautiful is inherently good. Goodness is beauty, beauty is goodness, and from their acquisition, comes the experience of happiness.
Diotima: “What is given by the possession of beauty?”
Plato: “I have no answer ready.”
Diotima: “Then… let me put the word ‘good’ in the place of the beautiful, and repeat the question once more:
If he who loves good, what is it then that he loves?”
Plato: “The possession of the good.”
Diotima: “And what does he gain who possesses the good?”
Diotima: “Yes, the happy are made happy by the acquisition of good things.”
We at Diotima & Co. have taken this philosophy as our standard for creating a business that not only promotes and deals in what is beautiful, but what is also good. Who, after all could argue against the intrinsic beauty of a perfect diamond? Or the beauty of an alternative that is perfect in its own right. More importantly, who could argue against the ‘goodness’ of something as unique as it is attainable, as gorgeous as it is ethical?
Diotima & Co. is proud to offer our one of a kind Eonia Diamond® because we desire to produce, support and supply a product as stunningly flawless as it is eco-conscious and affordable. We desire to produce, support and supply not only what is beautiful, but what is good.
